Samajik Bandhilki Foundation, in collaboration with Wockhardt Hospital and Dr. Agarwal Eye Clinic, successfully organized a Free Health Check-Up Camp on Saturday, 12th April 2026, at Shatra Nyati Niwas Hall, Opposite Girgaon Church, Raja Ram Mohan Roy Road, Charni Road, Mumbai – 400004. The camp was held from 10:00 AM onwards and ran through the better part of the day, witnessing an overwhelming and heartwarming response from the local community. Healthcare in urban India remains deeply unequal. While world-class hospitals and specialist clinics exist within a few kilometres, millions of working-class families in cities like Mumbai go years without a basic check-up — not because they don't care about their health, but because the cost, the queues, and the complexity of navigating the healthcare system make it inaccessible. This camp was our answer to that gap.
The Venue & Turnout
Shatra Nyati Niwas Hall, nestled in the heart of Girgaon — one of Mumbai's oldest and most densely populated neighbourhoods — provided the perfect setting for this initiative. The hall filled up quickly as residents from Girgaon, Charni Road, Thakurdwar, Kalbadevi, and surrounding areas arrived in large numbers, many accompanied by elderly family members and young children. By mid-morning, the queue stretched well beyond the entrance, a testament to the community's hunger for accessible healthcare. In total, over 100 patients were screened and treated on the day — a number that exceeded our initial projections and reinforced why initiatives like these are so urgently needed.
Services Offered
Every attendee had access to a full suite of health screenings and consultations, all provided at absolutely no cost:
👁️ Eye Examination — conducted by trained optometrists and ophthalmologists from Dr. Agarwal Eye Clinic, screening for refractive errors, early signs of glaucoma, cataracts, and diabetic retinopathy.
🩺 Blood Pressure Check — quick screening to identify hypertension, one of the most underdiagnosed conditions in urban low-income populations
❤️ ECG (Electrocardiogram) — cardiac screening to detect arrhythmias, early signs of heart disease, and other electrical irregularities of the heart
🦴 Bone Density Check — especially important for women above 40 and the elderly, helping detect early osteoporosis before fractures occur
📊 BMI Assessment — body mass index measurement combined with dietary and lifestyle counselling
🫁 Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) — lung capacity and airflow measurement, critical for identifying asthma, COPD, and other respiratory conditions common in urban, high-pollution environments.
🩸 Blood Sugar Test — fasting and random blood glucose screening to identify pre-diabetes and diabetes, conditions affecting millions of Indians who remain undiagnosed.
👨⚕️ Free Doctor Consultations — one-on-one consultations with experienced physicians from Wockhardt Hospital, who reviewed test results, answered patient questions, and provided referrals where necessary.
On the Ground
The energy inside the hall was one of quiet purpose. Volunteers — many of them young students and community members — guided attendees through each station, ensured orderly queuing, assisted elderly patients, and helped manage documentation. Medical staff from both partner institutions worked tirelessly, moving between stations, reviewing results, and spending meaningful time with each patient rather than rushing through the numbers. Several elderly attendees told our volunteers that this was the first time in years — some said ever — that they had received a comprehensive check-up. A number of patients were flagged for follow-up care based on their results, and our team ensured they received guidance on where and how to access further treatment. For many families present, the camp wasn't just about the screenings. It was about being seen. About an organisation showing up in their neighbourhood and saying — your health matters, and we're here.
Why This Matters
Girgaon and its surrounding areas are home to thousands of families from lower and lower-middle income backgrounds — daily wage workers, small traders, domestic workers, and retired individuals living on limited savings. For these communities, a visit to a private hospital or specialist clinic can mean a full day's wages lost, a loan taken, or a health concern left unaddressed for months or years. Preventive healthcare — the kind offered at camps like this — can be genuinely life-saving. Catching high blood pressure early prevents strokes. Identifying blood sugar irregularities prevents the onset of full diabetes. Detecting a lung condition before it worsens prevents hospitalisation. These are not abstract benefits. These are the real, tangible outcomes of making healthcare accessible. This is the work Samajik Bandhilki Foundation exists to do.
